Silver Heartbeats: "Scenery and Small Trips" Scans - Camping & Canoeing (August 2025)
Most of the images in the “Scenery and Small Trips” box of slides are from Girl Scout Camp and canoe trips.
Grandma Pat was a girl scout, and much of her young adult and collegiate life was spent as a camp counselor at a scout camp called Camp Windego. I was able to identify which camp she worked at by some lettering on a truck in one of the slides. Her camp nickname was “Dale” and other friends were not identified in the photographs by their government/given names, but by their camp nicknames like Toosie, Salty, Tug, Beeb, Sniff, and Bucky. It appears that Camp Windego is no longer in operation, but in searching about it I was able to find a Facebook group of Camp Windego alumni and shared som images there—group members were able to identify landmarks, counselors that became camp directors, and shared what their nicknames were.
She was also an avid lover of canoeing and the outdoors as several canoe and friend trips to waterways are identified in this collection, most being in Wisconsin. Such places include Spooner Wisconsin, Agnes Lake, Devil’s Lake, Boundary Waters, Booth Lake, and more.
This entry concludes my scans of box 1/5. I may revisit some in the future if I decide to restore them as a few of these images have coloration issues, light leaks, and more. When I scan these images in, I do go through and remove dust as well as I can. Since these slides are decades old, there is a lot of dust and residue. I am looking to find a way to remove the dust without wiping them down.
The next slide box is labeled “Before 1959”….which may contain more memories like this as 1959 was the year in which Grandma Pat and Grandpa John got married, so more to come soon!
