Contact Elected Officials about Enbridge Line 6 Leak in Wisconsin
Below is a script that you can use for any elected official at any level you wish to contact by email or phone on the Enbridge Line 6 leak. Tailor it accordingly, you need not credit me for this. I have included some language on Line 5 as well in case you would also like to do this.
In addition to writing or calling legislators, feel free to share the news on this story with your neighbors and other media outlets. It has been mostly covered by Caitlin Looby of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Dear ELECTED OFFICIAL,
My name is _________ and I live in ___________, Wisconsin and am a constituent of yours. I recently learned of the nearly 70,000 gallons of crude oil that leaked in Jefferson County from the Enbridge Line 6 Pipeline. Based on reporting from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (could add other journalistic sources here), I have come to learn that there is no statute in Wisconsin requiring that Enbridge (or responsible party) nor the Department of Natural Resources report on incidents such as this oil spill. I was also disturbed to hear that this incident occured mid-November and is only now becoming public knowledge.
I am writing to you today to ask for regulation and protection for Wisconsinites involving oil spills or other incidents from private companies that may harm our drinking water, environment, and safety.
I have also learned that another pipeline (Line 5) of Enbridge is being rerouted near the Bad River and Lake Superior which also puts those waterways at risk. I urge you to please pressure the DNR to reconsider this serious risk of 20% of Earth’s freshwater and the populations of the Bad River Band.
Sincerely,
YOUR NAME
